Lorica — the Sila village on Lake Arvo

Lorica is a mountain hamlet at 1,380 m above sea level, in the province of Cosenza (Calabria, southern Italy). Overlooking Lake Arvo, it sits at the heart of the Sila National Park, a UNESCO MAB Biosphere Reserve. Both a discreet ski resort and a summer base for trekking and lake activities.

Where exactly

Lorica is a hamlet of the municipality of Casali del Manco (CS). It lies on the western shore of Lake Arvo, near Monte Botte Donato (1,928 m), the highest peak of the Sila plateau.

What to do in Lorica

In winter: skiing & snowshoeing

The Lorica - Monte Botte Donato ski resort offers alpine slopes for all levels, a ski school and rentals. Typical season: December - March, peaking in January and February. Cross-country loops run through pine laricio forests.

In summer: lake & trekking

Lake Arvo is open for swimming from June to September, with kayak, pedalo, fishing and a 30 km lakeside path. The Sila National Park has trails to the Giants of the Sila, centuries-old laricio pines (some over 350 years old, 45+ m tall).

Local food

Sila cuisine is rustic and savory: caciocavallo silano DOP cheese, sausages, porcini mushrooms, Sila potatoes IGP, mostarde, chestnut and acacia honey. In winter, expect homemade pasta with mushroom sauce.
